APIA, SAMOA – 17 JANUARY 2022: There is a chance that Samoa could be hit by a cyclone in the next 7 days if the active convergence zone associated with unsettling weather activities continue on its current path.

The Assistant Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) of the Meteorology Division, Afaese Dr. Luteru Tuvale said the cyclone’s current path is heading towards Auckland, New Zealand and there is a chance it could continue on to the Pacific zone.

“The Meteorology Division is keeping a close watch on its current path and updates,” said Afaese.

Heavy rain & flood warning remains
The latest weather bulletin recorded heavy rainfalls with poor visibility, gusty winds, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes.

Whilst the wind advisory was cancelled, heavy rain and flood warning are still in effect for all areas.

As Samoa is in the cyclone season, warnings have been issued especially to those residing close to rivers and coastal areas.

According to the latest weather update, the active convergence zone continues to linger within our forecast zone and is generating thunderstorms and heavy falls in the vicinity of the group.

“The risk for flooding is elevated through the night as more precipitation is observed. Strong wind gusts are possible during showers at some areas,”
