COVID-19 UPDATE: Now 27 Positive Cases; 6 Omicron, 1 Delta variant

APIA, SAMOA – 27 JANUARY 2022: The infectious Omicron variant has been confirmed to have infected 6 of the passengers now in isolation. These are the latest results returned from New Zealand.

Meanwhile, a close contact of an infected passenger from Brisbane is the latest positive case bringing the total number of positive cases to 27 as of this morning.

According to a NEOC media statement, as with the 27 positive cases, he is also asymptomatic – showing no symptoms.

This follows the administration of the PCR tests and all other specimen returned negative.

Of the specimen sent to New Zealand for testing, 6 are Omicron and 1 is the Delta variant.

As announced by Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, Cabinet approved yesterday afternoon the nationwide lockdown has been extended for another 24 hours beginning at 6pm today, Thursday 27th January 2022 until 6pm on Friday 28th January 2022.

Conditions for Level 3 lockdown will remain including opening hours from 8am to 2pm today for services such as shops, money transfer outlets, petrol stations and pharmacies as announced earlier this week.

Conditions prescribed for the partial opening of these services include the mandatory wearing of facial masks, social distancing, showing of vaccination cards and no children under 12 are allowed in these public places.

The public is once again advised that Samoa remains at Alert Level 3 and all restrictions are to be carefully observed and complied with. This includes the wearing of masks, practicing of 2meters social distancing, washing hands regularly and carrying around your vaccination card at all times.
