87 year old female confirmed Samoa’s second COVID 19 related death

APIA, SAMOA – 03 APRIL 2022: An 87 year old female of the Fa’asaleleaga district in Savaii has been confirmed as Samoa’s second COVID-19 related death.
The Ministry of Health confirmed today that the woman was admitted at the Malietoa Tanumafili II Hospital at Tuasivi last Thursday, 31 March 2022 with severe respiratory symptoms, and was diagnosed with COVID19 and severe pneumonia.
A Ministry statement said the woman had no known medical comorbidities however, she was unvaccinated.
“Despite the best efforts of the medical and nursing team at MT Hospital to respond to the patient, her conditions worsened and she eventually passed away at 10.30am this morning,” the statement said.
“We upkeep the families and relatives of the deceased in our prayers as they go through these difficult times,” said the statement.
First Covid related death
Samoa recorded its first COVID-19 related death last Thursday, 30 March who was a 67 year old male of Aleipata who had multiple comorbidities.
He died shortly after he was admitted at the Lalomanu District Hospital.
Since the first community case was detected on 17 March 2022, the latest figures from the Ministry of Health (as of yesterday 02 April), recorded 203 new community cases, taking the total number of community cases to 2,279.
There are 1,517 active cases while 761 people are confirmed to have fully recovered. Nine (9) people are currently being isolated at the Moto’otua National Hospital.
Per age group, the highest number of cases are those between 15 and 54 years with 1635 recorded cases.
There are 139 cases of babies 0-4 years and 118 cases in the 65+ age group.
Meanwhile, the vaccination roll out continues this week as 99% have had the first dose and 90.2% had both. But only 23,162 have had the third dose – Booster out of the target population of 121,891.
