APIA, SAMOA – 11 AUGUST 2023: The Papa Puleia Primary School in Savaii is getting $22,000 financial support from the German Government to tile the classrooms.
The funding agreement was signed this week by the German Honorary Consul in Samoa, Tagaloa Crista Szegedi and Project Manager Afoa Stefan Szegedi and the Papa Puleia Primary School principal, Talalafai Toma Amosa and President of the school committee Maui Vaila.
Talalafai expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Tagaloa for the much needed assistance.
He said for years, the parents have constantly contributed mats to cover the floor but that will be no more as the school will now have new tiles for the classrooms.
Papa Puleia School is the first to receive the assistance from the German grassroots grants in 2023 and Afoa said they are committed to supporting any educational projects.
The German Grass Root Scheme has funded 24 projects in Samoa so far and has formed partnerships in support of education and 40% of their support was towards schools in Savaii and 60% for schools in Upolu.
The Minister for Women, Community & Social Development and Member of Parliament for Papa Puleia, Leota Laki Sio acknowledged the support from the German Government.
He said the assistance goes hand in hand with the Samoan Government strategy of prioritising social development, health and education and he hopes the German Government continue to provide assistance for Samoa especially with the establishment of the District Council Offices as another avenue where assistance is directed through.
The German Grass Root Scheme was specifically for education. However, assistance has extended to organisations such as the Samoa Victim Support Group (SVSG), GOSHEN, Salafai Business and Special Olympics.
