Vodafone Samoa promises 5G speed for CHOGM in October

Apia, SAMOA – 27 March 2024 – Vodafone Samoa has promised fast internet speed at low cost with the arrival of its 5G network expected to be up and running when Samoa hosts CHOGM in October this year.
Vodafone Samoa’s Chief Executive Officer, Rana Bose made the announcement at its 5G network launch at the Taumeasina Resort last night.
Bose said that Vodafone Samoa is now working around the clock to ensure that the 5G network will be in service before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October 2024.
In her keynote address, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa said that this will be a milestone showcasing Samoa’s capability as a small island nation in the ICT sector.
She said Samoa is about to take a giant leap forward and join developed nations with their journey towards technological excellence.
“This is a testament of Vodafone Samoa’s commitment towards Samoa, and it marks a significant milestone in Samoa’s technological landscape,” said Fiame.
“The 5G technology will not only revolutionised the way we communicate but also pave the way for unprecedented opportunities and progress in various sectors of our economy,” the Prime Minister said.
“The introduction of the 5G is more than just an upgrade in the telecommunication infrastructure as it symbolises commitment to innovation.”
Vodafone’s Roll-out plan
CEO Bose said the rollout plan for Vodafone Samoa covers the whole of Samoa following their motto that “no one should be left behind.”
5G is believed to be ten times faster than the current service offered and will empower businesses and enhance education and support health services.
He said $13 million is the cost for Phase 1 which will cover installation of 6 new towers in Savaii and Upolu.
Phase 2 will include expansion to cover other sites.
What 5G offers include fast internet at low costs, assist with remote surgery and learning, reliable business network, self-driving cars and more.
Vodafone Samoa expects the 5G network to go live before CHOGM in October.
