Apia, Samoa – 23 August 2024 – The Government of Japan continues its commitment in its growing partnership with the Government of Samoa through promoting the health and well-being of the people of Samoa.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Samoa, H.E. Mr. SENTA Keisuke handed over to the Minister of Health, Afioga Valasi Luapitofanua Toogamaga Tafito Selesele, a mobile dental vehicle valued at USD$908, 000( approximately SAT$2,400,000).

Over the years, Samoa’s healthcare sector has faced considerable challenges particularly in providing adequate dental care. The national hospital dental department, despite its best efforts, has struggled to meet high demand for services due to a lack of space and equipment.

Recognizing this need, Japan extended its support to Samoa through its various projects aimed at strengthening the country’s dental care infrastructure.

The new dental mobile clinic vehicle donated Japan’s Grant Aid Assistance for the Economic and Social Development Programme.

The collaboration between Japan and Samoa’s Ministry of Health began in 2016 when Japan provided essential dental equipment which laid a foundation for continuous efforts to improve dental care in Samoa.

In 2018, Japan took another step by providing the first mobile dental clinic vehicle with related equipment, which allowed the dental department to reach underserved communities and schools.

Today, Japan is pleased to contribute further by handing over a second mobile dental clinic vehicle. This new addition represents Japan’s ongoing dedication to ensuring all Samoans, regardless of their location, have access to quality dental care.

In addition to this support, Japan also facilitated training for Samoan healthcare staff by Japanese experts. This training ensures that the mobile dental clinic vehicle will be utilized to its fullest potential, empowering Samoan healthcare professionals to deliver the highest standard of care.

The project was made possible through Japan’s Grant Aid Assistance for the Economic and Social Development Programme.
