Apia, Samoa – 18 October 2024 – Samoa has embarked on a significant initiative set to amplify young voices in national decision-making.

This is through the launch of the Samoa Youth Advisory Board on Wednesday this week. This newly formed Board is set to play a crucial role in elevating the concerns and aspirations of young Samoans, marking a pivotal step in the nation’s commitment to youth empowerment.

The board’s establishment was recently approved by Cabinet and led to an inaugural meeting attended by key officials including the Minister for Women, Community, and Social Development (MWCSD), Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o.

Fifteen board members and four observers were selected through a comprehensive Expression of Interest (EOI) process, showcasing their dedication to the cause along with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

In launching the Advisory Board, Minister Mulipola articulated the board’s significance in shaping Samoa’s future, highlighting the fact that young people represent 57 percent of the population.

“It is imperative that their perspectives influence our national agenda,” she stated.

The Minister also introduced the theme “Cast the Net Anew” conceived during Youth Development Day on September 30, which will serve as a guiding principle for the board’s work and initiatives.

The outcomes from the Youth Development Day outlined key priority areas that will shape the national Youth Development Framework, modeled after the Pacific Youth Development Framework discussed during the recent Pacific Youth Ministers Meeting. This framework is designed to align with the aspirations of Samoa’s youth and will guide the board’s endeavors moving forward.

Minister Mulipola announced that the board will host its first national event in December, focusing on governance and leadership. This meeting will be crucial for endorsing the Terms of Reference and drafting a strategic plan.

By 2025, the board aims to expand its focus to include vital areas such as economic empowerment and education.

The minister emphasized the importance of accountability and inclusivity.

“Remember, having a voice comes with responsibility,” she urged the board members. “Commit to your role, include others, lead with purpose, and truly understand the issues our youth face.”

As the Samoa Youth Advisory Board embarks on this journey, they are not just advocates but change makers entrusted with bringing the voices of all young Samoans to the forefront of national discussions.

“Have the courage to share your ideas,” Minister Mulipola concluded, assuring the youth that the Ministry is committed to supporting their journey.

The Ministry acknowledged the Tautua for their unwavering support of Samoan youth, recognizing their integral role in this transformative process in the hope that young leaders will contribute significantly to shaping policies that reflect their dreams and aspirations for a better tomorrow.
