Apia, Samoa – 21 October 2024 – After its virtual journey to the 56 counties of the Commonwealth, the Torch of Change, carried by the Samoa traditional voyaging canoe Gaualofa, arrived on land this morning on its way to the official opening of the CHOGM 2024 Youth Forum at the EFKS Hall at Mulinu’u Bay.

The Torch was carried and presented by the reigning Miss South Pacific Moemoana Safa’atoa Schwenke to the Samoa National Youth representatives as a beacon of change against domestic violence against women and children and champion equal opportunities for all in the Commonwealth countries.

“As a young Pacific leader, I have witnessed the beauty and resilience of our people, but I have also seen the challenges. The Pacific way teaches us that we are stronger together bonded by our cultural values, love, honour and respect for each other and the environment,” said Moemoana.

In acknowledging the Torch and its message, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa said the Commonwealth family is united by history and driven by the future.

“The three forums we are launching this morning represent the critical voices of the people especially the women, youth and children; and the Commonwealth is more than a grouping of nations. It embodies shared values, aspirations and a commitment to democracy development and peace,” said the Prime Minister.

“We come together to find solutions to global challenges from climate change,  economic uncertainty and social justice and this week is an opportunity for a meaningful dialogue and impact collaboration  across the Commonwealth family,” she said.

She referred to Samoa’s Voyaging Canoe Gaualofa as a symbol of our journey together and through the three forums launched today, leaders have a chance to hear and listen.

“As a Commonwealth Aiga (translated family), our strength is not by size but by the unity towards protecting and uplifting all, and through innovation and collaboration, we will triumph,” said Fiame.
