Apia, Samoa – 12 February 2025 – The Marine Pollution Advisory Committee (MPAC) has confirmed the complete removal of the Precautionary Zone in Safata at the site of the sunken HMNZS Manawanui. MPAC says the removal follows confirmation of the test results from the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS).

This precautionary zone was established to advise against fishing in any part of the ocean in the Safata District [marked by the white line in image] until scientific testing confirmed that the seawater and marine life in this area were clear and uncontaminated.

The good news from SROS was delivered to MPAC yesterday. Subsequently, the precautionary zone, which had been in place since October 2024, has since been lifted.

The white line has been removed leaving the new Prohibited Zone marked by the red line, closer to the sunken vessel.

Prohibited Zone Remains in Effect
However, the Prohibited Zone – a 2-kilometer radius around the site of the sunken HMNZS Manawanui – remains in place as fuel removal operations continue.

It is emphasized that this area of the ocean [marked in red] is strictly off-limits to all unauthorised individuals, boats and any type of aircraft (including drones).

Currently, the MPAC in collaboration with the New Zealand Government along with its contractors, continue to carry out specialized operations to remove fuel from the HMNZS Manawanui.

The Ministry extends its deepest gratitude to the esteemed leaders and representatives of the Safata District for their ongoing support of the Government’s efforts.
