Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Outbreak in Samoa Has Ended
Apia, Samoa – 17 May 2025 – The Ministry of Health has announced that the Pertussis (Whooping Cough) outbreak declared on 28 November 2024, has now officially ended. The announcement follows a consistent decline in reported cases, with zero suspected cases in the past four weeks.
Since the outbreak was declared, a total of 427 suspected and confirmed cases of Pertussis have been reported. The Ministry has observed a steady reduction in case numbers over the past 3 months, a positive indication of improved immunization coverage and public health response.
The Acting Director of Health, Tagaloa Dr. Robert Thomsen says that this outcome reflects the collective efforts of the health workers, communities, and families who took action to protect themselves and others and he thanks all members of the public, partners, and communities for their continued cooperation and support.
Tagaloa said while in the spread of this disease is currently under control, the Ministry strongly urges the public not to be complacent. Pertussis remains a contagious disease that can resurface if preventive measures are not maintained.
It is essential to ensure that immunizations, particularly for pertussis, are kept up to date.
