Apia, Samoa – 18 September 2025 – Prime Minister, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt has declared support for Israel. He told the media that in Samoa’s Constitution, Samoa is founded on God.

“Our forefathers decided Samoa adopt the God of Israel and the Biblical account that God blesses those who protect and pray for his people; and that God curses those who curse his people,” he stated.

He was responding to a media question about the presence of Jewish elements at the swearing in ceremony including the shofar, flag and scarfs.

The Prime Minister said that the Constitution is based on the God of Israel, God of Abraham, God of Issac, God of Jacob and the God Samoa holds as its God.

He also said that Samoa and Isarel have signed an agreement for mutual recognition and support.

“So diplomatically, religiously, culturally, we stand with Israel,” he said.

But Samoa had previously abstained from supporting Israel at the United Nations on the war against Hamas and the fall out.

“But in my time as Prime Minister, I will declare this, that Samoa will not withdraw from supporting Israel as the country of God’s people.

“If we’re searching for what blesses the country, that’s me – Laauli, I stand for Israel and Gods people.”

He said that in the world we live in, are made of people and governments run on decisions made by people.

“But Samoa stands with the country of Gods people. From now on and until I’m not longer the Prime Minister, I stand in support of Israel and Gods people,” he stated.
