Samoa’s PM & NZ Foreign Minister discuss Border Security & Drug Trafficking Issues
19 October 2025 – Border security issues including the shared challenge of tackling the rising drug trafficking in the region were among the issues discussed by the Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt and New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Vaovasamania Winston Peters.
The meeting took place at the Samoa Consulate in Mangere this afternoon and also attended by Samoa’s Consul General, Afemata Palusalue Faapo II.
Other issues discussed included the priorities of the new Samoan government and the special relationship between Samoa and New Zealand grounded in history and people to people connections.
The two leaders also discussed the development of private enterprise in Samoa including its exporter sector and New Zealand’s Recognized Seasonal Employer scheme.
The Prime Minister is extending his stay in New Zealand for three more weeks on medical advice, following surgery to one of his ankles.
