By Lagi Keresoma/
Apia, SAMOA – 29 January 2026 – The Coroner had ordered postmortems on two bodies now under police custody.
The postmortems will be conducted on a Chinese citizen found dead at his workplace and on Papalii Sia Figel who died this week while in custody at the Tanumalala Prison.
The Acting Police Commissioner Leiataua Samuelu said he was informed of Figiel’s passing between 6 and 7am Monday morning by the Tanumalala Prison morning shifts.
According to Leiataua, the body was taken to Faleolo health clinic where the doctor confirmed her death.
Asked if Papalii was still alive enroute to Faleolo, he said that will be determined in the postmortem and inquest and could not disclose more details as investigation continues.
He also confirmed that Papalii lived alone in a single cell since she was placed in custody in 2024, but there are cells shared by 5 women next to hers.
He was also asked if there were any specific medical instructions for Papalii considering her health issues while in custody, he said “no.”
The Chinese citizen
A Chinese citizen who worked at a Chinese mechanical workshop was found dead on 23 January 2026 at the workshop.
Investigation continues but Leiataua said foul play is not suspected.
He also confirmed that there are two other bodies at the morgue awaiting post mortem.
Missing fisherman
The Police and Samoa Fire Emergency Service Authority (SFESA) search and rescue team continue their search for a 46-year-old man who has been missing since Friday last week.
The man went fishing with three others but due to strong winds, the men got separated and whilst three managed to reach shore, one did not.
The incident happened at Samusu, Aleipata and Leiataua said that if the search continues to be unsuccessful, they will have to consider calling it off until police get new information.
Leiataua also warned fishermen of the current bad weather the country is experiencing and that fishermen should be cautious when going out to sea.
