Apia, SAMOA – 8 February 2026 – The Minister of Women, Social Development and Community (MWSDC) Moefaauouo Julius Ah Kui Tafunai has confirmed that 4 HRPP Members of Parliament did not apply for the position of Chairperson of the District Development Councils.

The MPs include Vaaelua Senetenari Samau for Faasaleleaga 2, Aeau Tima Leavai for Falealupo, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi for Lepa and Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi of Faleata 3.

The Minister confirmed and clarified that the four MPs did not apply after numerous media announcements where the MPs condemn the Government for excluding them saying they did apply for the position for their respective constituencies.

“They did not apply but only submitted letters voicing their objection to the selection criteria,” he said.

Moefaauouo is the Minister responsible for the District Development Project with 51 constituencies having $1.8M tala to spend before the next financial year this coming June when the project funds will be increased to $2m per district.

Despite the Ministers confirmation, HRPP leader Tuilaepa continues to refute the truth behind the objection letters and have already talked about taking legal action against the Government.

The other three MPs have also accused the Prime Minister of lying when he clarified that the four MPs did not apply.

The former Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa is also considering joining HRPP in their legal action.

Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt said the governments new policy in the selection of Chairpersons for the District Development Project, is to ensure the protection and success of the project as the Opposition MPs had been against it in their election campaign.
