Apia, SAMOA – 24 February 2026: Work on upgrading the Savalalo Bus Terminal has started this week with the removal of the old bus stop shelters and all small vendor shops around the area.

The idea is to utilise the area for bus services only where they pick up and drop off passengers whilst all vendor shops move inside the new Flea market facility.

Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Schmidt confirmed Cabinet’s decision and the allocation of $3 million tala for the project.

The Savalalo bus Station in the center of Apia is a busy and overcrowded place, especially in the mornings when students and workers start their day, and in the evenings after school and work.

The station is a popular public spot for many people in Samoa, with vendors selling food and other items, students, workers, taxis and buses all sharing the space.

The rebuilding project includes resealing the area, constructing new drop-off and pick-up zones, and creating a public waiting area where people can stay while waiting for their transportation.

The Government plans for the new market and bus station to be fully operational and in use before the arrival of the Prime Minister of New Zealand scheduled in late March. The Prime Minister Chris Luxon is scheduled to open the market which is funded by New Zealand.

“All shops will be moved inside the market, leaving the outside area for buses and for the public and the work must be completed before the official opening,” said La’auli

The Government is also rebuilding the Malaefatu playground at Sogi, as well as fixing the Fish Market where alot of people congregate everyday including Sundays. The Prime Minister also suggested the idea of late-night shopping once a week.
