By Lagi Keresoma/
Apia, SAMOA – 2 February 2026: Japan has reaffirmed its diplomatic relations and commitment to the Pacific through common values and their stance for global peace.
At the celebration of Japan’s National Day and the Emperors 66 birthday last Friday, Ambassador Suzuki alluded to the shared common desire of both countries for peace, not just regionally but globally.
“Japan is a nation that earnestly seeks peace even when faced with differences of opinions with other countries, we consistently pursue resolution through dialogue, never through the display or use of force,” said His Excellency.
Through the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM) held every three years, Japan hopes to strengthen the PALM process through true partnerships and further enhance the relationships and strongly support the 2025 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent already adopted by the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).
He said Japan is a nation that maintain its pride and dignity, never succumbing to coercion from other powers, and never hesitating to speak out for what is right, thereby preserving her independence.
His Excellency believes that the spirit of independence and self-reliance among the Samoan people is strong and if not stronger than that of the Japanese people.
“This shared ethics forms a powerful bond between our nations,” he said.
“Japan has always endeavoured to be a true friend to the Pacific including Samoa, providing necessary cooperation whenever requested. It is our sincere desire to continue this approach in the years to come,” he said.
Last week Japan and Samoa signed the Exchange of Notes for a project to the value of $8m tala to provide Automated Weather Observation Systems for Samoa’s Meteorology Division.
“We will also continue our assistance under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects especially in the areas of health and education,” he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo spoke on behalf of the Samoan Government.
She referred to the significance of the occasion which is a reminder of the deep respect shared between the two nations.
“We also reflect on Samoa and Japan’s long-standing relationship since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973 and our partnership has grown stronger and has brought real benefits to us and the community,” she said.
Mulipola said Japan has been a consistent and valued development partner and her support has helped Samoa address priority in areas such as health, education, water and sanitation, agriculture, climate resilience and infrastructure and the JICA program is one of the most recognised pillars of our cooperation.
She proposed a toast congratulating His Majesty the Emperor his 66th birthday and the people of Japan on their National Day.
