Apia, SAMOA – 22 March 2026: The new policy and procedures for drug testing by the Ministry of Samoa Police, Prison and Corrections Services (SPPCS) will be launched by the Prime Minister and Minister of Police tomorrow.

The Policy will strengthen the integrity and accountability within the organization and sends a clear message that there is no place for illegal drugs in institutions responsible for safeguarding the community.

The Prime Minister initiated this Government initiative that aims to uphold high standards among those who serve.

The new policy and procedures also support the Government’s goals of strengthening law and justice, promoting public safety, and addressing the impact of illegal drugs on communities.

It also shows a commitment to making sure national institutions stay strong, responsible, and able to respond to changing challenges.

The Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Schmidt told the media in last weeks press conference that the mandatory drug test will be conducted on all public servants and Government workers. He also said that a clean drug test will be a requirement for all applicants for future jobs in the public service as well as intending candidates for future Members of Parliament.

The drug tests will be carried out by the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) with funding allocated under the budget allowing them to continue the drug tests for everyone.

“The new drug testing policy and procedures are the same as those for the Public Service Commission as they are responsible for all Government workers,” said La’auli.
