Apia, SAMOA – 31 July 2026: The Government has confirmed that there are no approved hiring costs for the private use of Samoan traditional fales at the Malaefatu Park at Sogi.

The purpose of the establishment of the Park and the recent creation of traditional Samoan fales is for the public and families to use and enjoy at no costs.

“Malaefatu Park remains open to the public for its intended recreational use during normal operating hours as previously communicated by the Ministry,” said the Ministry of Sports and Recreation that looks after the park.

The statement corrects a newspaper article that said that the fales can be hired for $230.

The Government statement said the initiative to build these fales at the Malaefatu Park was for families get together and recreational activities.

“The building of Samoan Fales in the Park is part of the vision of the Independence Committee 2026, Chaired by the Hon. Prime Minister, for families get together and recreation and add a personable character and atmosphere to the Malaefatu Park,” said the statement.

The Ministry of Recreation says that any private events by families, individuals, or organisations after the normal hours, they need to contact the Ministry for their requirements, and each inquiry will be assessed on its merits.

“The Ministry will provide the appropriate information and guidance, and the Ministry respectfully encourages the public to rely on official Ministry communications for accurate and up-to-date information regarding the use of the Malaefatu Park and any future booking arrangements.
