Apia, SAMOA – 15 October 2026 – As Samoa undergoes very dry conditions as the impact of the El Nino worsens, the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) responded to 34 fire dispatches during the White Sunday long weekend.
SFESA’s operational summary for the period recorded 71 emergency incidents across Upolu and Savai‘i during the three-day White Sunday long weekend from 10 to 12 October 2026.
There were 34 fire dispatches and 37 medical dispatches during the period, highlighting the range of emergencies its response teams handled over the long weekend.
Grass and rubbish fires accounted for most fire-related calls, with 24 incidents combined.
SFESA also responded to four structure fires and two motor vehicle accidents.
The authority’s Medical teams handled 37 calls involving emergencies such as respiratory distress, cardiac events, maternity emergencies and trauma.
The Faleata and Falelauniu areas were identified as the primary hotspot during the operational period.
SFESA urges public to take fire precautions
Following the high number of grass and rubbish fires, SFESA is urging the public against burning rubbish or grass during dry or windy conditions, as strong winds can carry embers into nearby homes and surrounding vegetation.
SFESA also advised households to clear dry grass, leaves and overhanging branches away from kitchens, stove areas and homes to reduce fire risks.
The authority reminds the public never to leave cooking fires, umu embers or open burns unattended.
People should ensure all fires and embers are completely extinguished before leaving the area.
SFESA also encouraged residents to dispose of waste safely and avoid burning plastic or household rubbish. Instead, the public should use designated municipal waste collection services.
