One shot dead, 1 critically wounded in Vaitele shooting

Apia, SAMOA – 3 August 2026 – Police have arrested a 66-year-old man after allegedly shooting dead a 20-year-old and critically wounding a 21-year-old in a shooting at Vaitele early Sunday morning.

Police are yet to identify the cause of the incident, and the accused is in custody and is expected to be charged after investigation is finalised.

Police have confirmed the firearm used in the shooting is unregistered and has been confiscated.

Police are still collecting evidence and talking to witnesses and are asking the public to come forward if they have any information that can help with the investigation and determine what may lead to the shooting.

The police also reminded the public that violence is never the answer, disputes and problems should be resolved peacefully through legal means.
