Apia, Samoa – 27 October 2025<\/strong> – As soon as the musicians started playing the notes, the children raised their voices to sing along.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa\u2019u Samoa, e matalasi, ua si\u2019osi\u2019omia e le sami<\/em>,\u201d they sang.<\/p>\n

Then louder: \u201cAtu mauga lanu lau \u2018ava, feoa\u2019i fi afi a o ou tagata!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

This was the joyous scene Thursday at Apia\u2019s Campus of Hope, run by the Samoa Victim Support Group. The multinational Pacific Partnership band, with members from Australia, Canada and the United States, arrived in Samoa this week aboard the USS John L. Canley<\/em> \u2013 the gray ship currently at anchor off of Apia Harbor.<\/p>\n

The ship and its crew are here as part of the annual U.S. Navy-led Pacific Partnership mission, the largest annual multinational humanitarian and civic assistance mission in the Pacific region.<\/p>\n

For each stop, the Pacific Partnership endeavours to add local songs into their repertoire.\u00a0 In addition to an instrumental rendition of \u201cSamoa Matalasi,\u201d vocalists Miella Sartori from the Australian Army and U.S. Navy Musician 3rd Class Damian Chambers have also prepared to sing \u201cPenina o Tiafau\u201d for local audiences.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe bounce off each other really well,\u201d said Sartori. \u201cThe best bit is being spontaneous. You see an opportunity and you take it,\u201d Musician Sartori said.<\/p>\n

The band will have several public performances over the coming week.<\/p>\n

\"Pacific<\/p>\n

On Saturday, October 25, the band performed at EFKS Church Hall in Mulinuu during the Community Health Engagement, when Pacific Partnership medical personnel will offer free eye exams and dental checks.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, October 28, students, faculty and the public can enjoy a lunchtime performance at Fale Samoa at the National University of Samoa.<\/p>\n

Then on Friday, October 31, come out to the night market at Samoa Cultural Village for performances at 7pm and 9pm.<\/p>\n

\"PacificNow in its 21st iteration, the Pacific Partnership works collaboratively with host and partner nations to enhance regional interoperability and disaster response capabilities, increase security and stability in the region, and foster new and enduring friendships.<\/p>\n

\u201cImproving regional interoperability\u2014especially ahead of high-risk weather season\u2014 ensures the Pacific family can support one another when disasters strike.\u201d\u00a0 said Commander of the Australian Contingent, Royal Australian Air Force Squadron Leader Gurkirat Singh.<\/p>\n

The Australian Defence Force\u2019s disaster management planner, Major Paul Randall highlighted the value of joint training and planning. \u201cPracticing our deployment and communication in a mass rescue scenario ensures we\u2019re ready to respond together when it matters most\u201d.<\/p>\n

Members of the public are invited to the remaining free health clinics in Faleolo on 27 October, Lalomanu on 28 October, Poutasi on 29 October, Saanapu on 30 October and Lufilufi on 31 October. Pacific Partnership 2025 will conclude on 2 November.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
