{"id":616,"date":"2021-11-30T00:59:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T00:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5635.temp.domains\/~talamuac\/?p=616"},"modified":"2022-01-12T00:26:49","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T00:26:49","slug":"court-to-hear-oecs-application-on-additional-women-seats-in-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/talamua.com\/?p=616","title":{"rendered":"Court to hear OEC\u2019s application on additional women seats in parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lagi Keresoma<\/p>\n<p><strong>APIA, SAMOA \u2013 29 NOVEMBER 2021:<\/strong> An application by the Electoral Commissioner on the additional women seats in parliament under Article 44 of the Constitution will be heard by the Supreme Court on 6th December.<\/p>\n<p>Fuimaono Sefo Ainuu of the Attorney General\u2019s office is representing the Electoral Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>The matter was adjourned to today for the Attorney General\u2019s office to inform the Court whether to withdraw or proceed with the application.<\/p>\n<p>Fuimaono informed the court to proceed and the application has drawn interest from both the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP) and the Faatuatua ile Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) party.<\/p>\n<p>Counsels for both parties asked the Court for an adjournment to await the outcome of the by-elections of 6 electoral constituencies before submitting their responses.<\/p>\n<p>The adjournment was granted and all parties are to file their submissions by 3 December and the hearing has been set for 6 December.<\/p>\n<p>One of the counsels told <em>Talamua<\/em> that one of the issues is the contention that the 10% of women parliamentarians under Article 44 of the Constitution should now be seven but not six as the Court had already ruled on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Lagi Keresoma APIA, SAMOA \u2013 29 NOVEMBER 2021: An application by the Electoral Commissioner on the additional women seats in parliament under Article 44 of the Constitution will be heard by the Supreme Court on 6th December.
