APIA, SAMOA – 25 JUNE 2021: It was a hot morning. Then it rained but it did not dampen the spirit of the Apia Primary students as they got into celebrating the International English Day.

Split into class levels, the student’s bright and colourful costumes representing different countries, contrasted the weather.

From the Pacific islands of Tokelau, Tuvalu, Tonga and the Maoris, to Asia and Europe, every level was at their best to outperform the others.

The excitement on their faces shows how much they enjoyed it but one wonders if they knew the purpose why this day is an annual event on the Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture’s curriculum.

“It is a way for us to learn about other countries culture and I enjoy dressing up in their traditional costumes, and it is fun,” said Tala Faranisisi of Year 7.

One of the teachers Ms. Laupepa said students always look forward to this annual event.

“I suppose it’s not only that they get to perform other countries cultural dances or singing, but it is an easy way of learning for them rather than us teachers explaining to them in a usual classroom setting,“ she said.

As a teacher, she noted that students participated actively and enjoyed learning through participation.
