APIA, SAMOA – 22 JANUARY 2022: There have been long queues at supermarkets and petrol stations after midday today as Samoans stock up for a 48 hours lockdown from 6pm tonight to 6pm Monday 24 January.

Fifteen (15) Covid-19 positive cases are confirmed and in quarantine and the Government is taking precautionary measures to contain the spread of the virus.

10 passengers on a repatriation flight from Brisbane, Australia were tested positive on Thursday morning and five more positive cases have been confirmed since.

Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa announced the 48 hour lockdown after a special Cabinet meeting this morning.

Samoa’s Covid-19 Alert Level has been elevated to 3 – Red or High Risk..

The lockdown will see all businesses, schools, government ministries and agencies, churches closed.

With the exception of essential workers, police will enforce the state of emergency lockdown conditions to ensure minimal movement of the general public.
