Samoa's 60th Independence Logo on display infront of the Government Building

APIA, SAMOA – 13 MAY 2022: Samoa looks to celebrate her 60^th Independence anniversary on 01 June after two half years of virtual celebrations due to the pandemic lockdown. The Logo and Theme for the 60th anniversary was launched in front of the FMFMII government building Tuesday this week.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa announced the winning logo as “Folau ma le Faatuatua” (Sail with Faith), a theme she said “best describes Samoa’s journey over the last 60 years, where we are now, and the future.”

The selected logo depicts significant historical events that shaped Samoa’s path to independence, its traditions, and its Christian values and beliefs as stipulated in its Constitution.

LOGO:

The logo depicts the Mau Movement, a significant historical event of our struggle for independence, symbolised by the single white stripe on the number 60.
The colours used are official colours of our national flag.
The Southern Cross constellation, as shown in our national flag, portrays our faith in Jesus Christ, as a Christian nation.
The logo’s design illustrates traditional Samoan motifs that reflect our unity as a nation and support for each other.

The logo was unveiled by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tuala Tevaga Ponifasio.

Cabinet approved the Logo and Theme on a recommendation by the Independence Committee from fifty nine submissions from various artists and graphic designers in Samoa and abroad earlier this year through an open advertisement for the competition.

Each entry was assessed thoroughly by the committee on who would be best to win the prize money of SAT$5,000.

The winner of the 60th Independence Celebrations Logo and Theme competition was awarded to the Bluwave Samoa, a company based in New Zealand and Samoa, owned and managed by Samoans.

The logo and theme after the launch will become a property of the Government of Samoa but will be open to businesses and individuals for use with legal requirements to be satisfied.

Fiamē further congratulated the nation for reaching the 60 year milestone of its independence anniversary which she describes “is no small achievement.”

“Our journey as a nation throughout these long years has not always been plain sailing. Challenging? Yes definitely. But has also been rewarding for all the generations that have traversed this important phase of our history,” she added.
