APIA, SAMOA – 15 JUNE 2022: A 50 year old man, Ropati Malaefono Ropati of Fusi, Saoluafata has pleaded guilty to one count of bigamy before Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma.

The complainant is the defendant’s first legal wife.

When the matter was called last week, Justice Roma granted bail to the defendant as there was no opposition from the prosecution.

However, a misunderstanding resulted in the defendant being held in custody since 6 June.

After hearing the defendant, Justice Roma directed prosecution to look into the circumstances of the matter, especially when it was him who ordered the release of the defendant last week.

Justice Roma also asked the prosecution to remind police that they must follow Court orders.

Prosecution apologized and said she will look into the matter and will ensure the defendant is released after today’s mention.

Before Justice Roma made a decision, the complainant raised her hand and asked the Court not to release the defendant.

Bigamy is having two wives at the same time and the maximum penalty is ten years imprisonment.

Justice Roma adjourned the matter to 7 July 2022 for sentencing before Justice Tafaomalo Leilani Tuala-Warren.
