By Talaia Mika
APIA, SAMOA – 05 SEPTEMBER 2022: Undergoing recovery from a broken jaw when he claimed the IBF cruiserweight title from Mairis Briedis 3 July 2022, Jai Opetaia is now using the opportunity to connect more with Samoan culture and family.
The 27 year old arrived to a rousing welcome last Friday and has been greeted with overwhelming respect and support from local authorities and people.
He is a guest of the Samoa Tourism Authority in a drive to promote Samoa overseas as the country’s borders re-opened after two years lockdown. Today, he was a gest of the students and teachers of the Maluafou College.
“It’s been amazing and just this morning we went to the school, just the energy that the school had, it’s a crazy feeling and I’m all honoured,” he told the media later.
“I’m really enjoying my time here in Samoa relaxing but when we go back next Tuesday, I’ll be back in training but I’m doing everything I can, I’m limited to the sorts of exercises I can do because I don’t want to slow down the healing process at all.”
Opetaia was born and raised in Australia and he is connecting and learning his Samoan culture which he emphasized, is significantly vital to him and his career going forward.
“Every time I come, I get more in touch with my culture,” he said.
He hails from the villages of Apia and Lalomanu and had also been carrying the Samoan flag with the Australian on the international stage during his major fights.
Tonight, he will be having a get together with his families in Samoa.
“I’ve got Samoan blood running through my veins so I want to feel more at home every time I come here,” he said.
Asked how big of a role his Samoan family plays in his career, he said it’s the biggest motivation.
Jai Opetaia now sets his eyes on the WBC title next.
