APIA, SAMOA – 18 NOVEMBER 2022: A team of Tongan amateur boxers have been confirmed to go against Australian, New Zealand and Samoan boxers in next weeks’ Next Generation Judgement Day 2022 at Gym 2, Faleata Sports Complex.

There are at least 25 amateur bouts and the highlight will be two Samoan Olympians making their professional debut.

Organized by the Marist Boxing, an affiliate to Marist Saint Joseph’s Sports Club and Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association, all overseas teams will arrive this weekend and a series of events throughout the week will lead up to boxing night on Friday 25 November.

This is the last sporting event for Marist International Sports Events 2022 which started with Marist 7s.

Samoa’s team will include boxers not only from Marist Boxing and Upolu and Savai’i Boxing Clubs.

The Next Generation Judgment Day event will be a Corporate Dinner Fundraising event and is a collaboration between Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association and Marist Saint Joseph’s Sports Club.

The Minister of Sports, Seuula Ioane and members of Marist Boxing, Chairman Laulu Tuugatiti Leauanae, Tavu’i MIke Lemisio and Lauano Gerwin Polu.

Bishop Laulu Tuugatiti Leauanae, Chairman of Marist Boxing says all proceeds from the event will go towards the development of the Marist Boxing Pathway and the Marist schools in Samoa.

“The Marist Boxing Pathway has helped develop boxers in the past 7 years which has resulted in our current Olympians which will be debuting in their professional bouts on Friday 25th November 2022,” says Leauanae.

Featured in the night will be double Samoan Silver Medallist, Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali in his professional debut against Apisa Naciqa of Fiji. Ato is a Board member of IBA/IBF on behalf of Oceania and the Pacific.

The second Samoan Olympian, Marion Ah Tong will be up against Ratu Rakuro also of Fiji.

“This will be good exposure for Samoa’s youth and junior boxers as it will give them an opportunity to experience overseas fighters from New Zealand, Australia and Tonga,” says Ato.

“The Marist Boxing Committee together with Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association and Marist Saint Josephs’ Sports Club would like to wish Toa Samoa all the best in their upcoming National Rugby League World Cup Finals this coming Sunday.”
