Samoa to celebrate the 9th International Day of Yoga

APIA, SAMOA –  20 JUNE 2023: Samoa will be one of the first countries in the world to celebrate the 9th International Day of Yoga at 0600 Wednesday morning 21 June 2023.

The event is organized by the small Indian community that call Samoa home that has been celebrating the International Day for Yoga under the auspices of the High Commission Office of India in New Zealand in the last 2 years.

Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa has been invited to celebrate the day in promoting public awareness about the benefits of the practice of yoga as part of the daily routine.

The dawn event tomorrow comprises of simple Yoga exercises which is open to the public who wish to join at 6 am at Amphitheater of the Matagialalua Friendship Park, Eleele fou.

The United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga on 11 December 2014 and endorsed by 175 member states.

For this year’s celebration, India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi will lead representatives of the UN member countries to perform Yoga on the International Day at the United Nations headquarters in New York several hours after Samoa starts the celebrations on 21 June.

The Indian Community in Samoa is very grateful to the Prime Minister, Fiamē Naomi Mataʻafa for her kind guidance and support.

“We are also grateful for the support provided by Vodafone Samoa, Samoa Tourism Authority, Samoa Natural Water, Tanumapua Farms, Sai Motors, Zyberwise, Pacific Multi Products and Samoa Timber Supplies for their support,” said the group in a media statement.

“We also acknowledge the guidance and support provided by the High Commission Office of India, New Zealand. Dr. Akshay Mishra – Acting Head of UNICEF on Yoga and the benefits of Yoga as one of the interventions to address non-communicable diseases, physical and mental health issues.”
