In an extraordinary turn of events at the esteemed Return to Paradise resort, the path of talented young athlete Han Matagi Lemalu intersected with a group of compassionate guests. What started as a delightful celebration of Philip McCracken and Cathy Taber’s birthdays transformed into a life-changing moment for Han, as the generous visitors recognized his exceptional talent and extended a helping hand.

Han Matagi Lemalu, a first-year engineering student at the National University of Samoa, had already proven himself as a promising athlete. His achievements included a Gold medal in the Intermediate Boys  400-meter bar Hurdles at the Samoa Games 2023, along with two Silver medals in the 110-meter bar hurdles and the 400-meter races, and a Bronze medal in the 4×100-meter relay.

During one of the resort’s Saturday night shows by the Maeva Band that Han’s exceptional skills caught the attention of Cathy Taber. Intrigued by his captivating performance, Cathy delved into Han’s background and discovered his remarkable potential as an athlete.

Impressed by Han’s talent and inspired by his dedication, Cathy, along with her husband Daryl and their friends Philip and Inga McCracken, decided to support his athletic aspirations. Before bidding farewell to Samoa, they surprised Han with a generous donation, offering financial assistance for his training and to support his family.
