APIA, SAMOA – 10 JULY 2023: The United States of America will soon have a Resident Ambassador in Samoa.

The move was announced by Ambassador, Tom Udall at the 4th July celebrations at the US Vailima residence.

Prime Minister, Fiame Naiomi Mataafa acknowledged the USA’s intention for a Samoa based ambassador.

“This will elevate representation here in Samoa and I am sure will further improve our ongoing relationship,” said Fiame.

Having an Ambassador based in Samoa will resolve some of the challenges, especially with visa applications which are conducted either online or the applicant having to travel to New Zealand for and interview.

Samoa and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1971, the US representation had been at the Charge d’affaires level with the Ambassador for Samoa based in Wellington, New Zealand.

But geopolitical developments with China’s growing influence in the Pacific region has renewed interest in the Pacific islands with diplomatic representation elevated for the United Kingdom and the United States to ambassadorial level.

Fiame congratulated the US on the commemoration of its 247 years of independence and also 52 years of diplomatic relations with Samoa.

“It is an important milestone as we celebrate close relations on our shared values on democracy, sovereignty, peace and security,” she said.

Fiame also acknowledged the services rendered by the US in support for Samoa through the return of the US Peace Corps and their US Coast Guard in patrolling Samoa’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Early this year the Peace Corps returned after disruption by the COVID-19 pandemic with more arriving this week.

As Samoa is currently without a patrol boat, Fiame expressed appreciation for the maritime services provided by the US Coast Guard.

She urged the US to renew its efforts to consolidate its support to the region on challenges of climate change and others to maintain its stability and prosperity.

Ambassador Udall touched on the two local projects the US is involved in which reinforces relations and foster mutual bilateral assistance.

He said there is no better place like Samoa where a total stranger can feel at home.

“At the heart of any true partnership lies shared values, aspiration and commitment to improving our lives through every service such as healthcare, education, and equal opportunities as the foundation of thriving a prosperous nation,” he said.

He is enthusiastic for the future Samoa and the US will accomplish together in years to come.
