Conspirators to murder get 4 years jail terms
By Lagi Keresoma
APIA, SAMOA – 11 AUGUST 2023: The two men who were found guilty of conspiring to murder former Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi have been sent to prison by Senior Justice Vui Clarence Nelson.
Malele Paulo (aka King Faipopo) has been sentenced to 4 years and Lema’i Sione to four and a half years behind bars.
During sentencing, Paulo informed the Court that he has new evidence to help with his case then said that a former Judge and also a lawyer have been deeply involved in his case.
He said human rights have been violated and he wished to be tried by a Court that upholds justice.
It is not the first time Paulo has accused members of the legal fraternity and after listening to Paulo’s outburst, Justice Nelson continued to deliver his decision,
Justice Nelson based his decision on each accused level of involvement in the conspiracy.
He said the reason why Lema’i received 4 ½ years was because it was his car that was used to pick up the gun that was supposed to be used in the conspiracy, and that he also received money for the same purpose through Western Union Money Transfer.
Counsel for Lema’i told Talamua that as soon as she receives the written decision, she will prepare her client’s appeal.
The case against Lema’i and Paulo started in 2019 when a third accused, Taualai Leiloa testified against Lema’i and Paulo in a closed-door trial where the Assessors found them guilty of conspiring to murder in May 2023.
The remaining defendant in this case is Australian citizen Pauga whom the prosecutor said they are preparing documents to extradite him to stand trial in Samoa.
