APIA, SAMOA – 22 AUGUST 2023: The police are investigating what seems to be a trend of stealing fish from containers ready for export from the Matautu wharf.

Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo said he could not disclose much as the investigation just started.

He did confirm that the containers of the goods for export are properties of a Chinese Fish Packing Company and a local company located on the wharf.

16 Ports Authority security guards suspended
In a press statement today by the Samoa Ports Authority said 16 security guards have been suspended pending an investigation of their alleged involvement in the theft.

The release stated that due to the incident, the Authority has implemented new changes to the port entry requirements since Saturday 19 August 2023.

Sources say the trend has been going on for some time with the suspects allegedly selling the stolen fish to local restaurants and supermarkets at much reduced prices.
