Apia, SAMOA – 14 March 2024 – Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa who is the Chairperson for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) Taskforce, launched the events Logo and Website last night.

“It is not often that we gather to speak about the Commonwealth, but this year, we are bringing the Commonwealth to Samoa, and to our Blue Pacific continent and it is fitting we pay tribute to the Commonwealth of Nations, an important organisation that Samoa joined in August 1970, of which nine (9) of our Pacific Islands Forum members are members of,” said Fiame.

Samoa is the first Pacific Islands to host CHOGM which was already hosted by New Zealand and Australia in the past years, and come October 2024, 56 countries will be represented in Samoa.

The theme for the Samoa CHOGM 2024 is “Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.”

Logo and Website
In June 2023, an Expression of Interest to design a logo and create a website for the CHOGM was advertised and although there were a few interests, the CHOGM Taskforce Media & Communications Sub-Committee settled for Vodafone to design the website and selected the logo designed by Tauila Epati Tuumatavai.

“I wish to warmly congratulate Tauila Epati Tuumatavai for designing the winning logo for the Samoa CHOGM 2024 competition that was launched last June. An event brand is usually the first thing that people will see, and remember. I believe that the Samoa CHOGM 2024 Logo connotes the values and principles of Samoa, the Blue Pacific and the Commonwealth and I look forward to how we can use this in our work going forward,” Fiame said.

Tuumatavai is employed at the IT Division of the Ministry of Education & Culture.

He said his design depicts a Samoan flower symbolising Samoa’s affiliation with the Commonwealth and each petal of the flower represents the heads of Government from 56 Commonwealth nations.

In the centre of the flower is a blue circle symbolising the Blue Pacific and each petal converging towards the centre of the flower symbolising their coming together to engage in the meeting, Taumatavai explained.

Prime Minister Fiame also commended Vodafone Samoa for its winning bid to develop the Samoa CHOGM 2024 Website.

“It is the starting point of an important communication tool for CHOGM 2024, providing information to the widest possible audience, beyond those delegations that will attend CHOGM,” she said.

What Samoa gain from being a member of Commonwealth and from hosting CHOGM?
Fiame said since independence, Samoa has gradually joined many multilateral and regional organisations to bolster political and development relations that have helped realise Samoa’s development aspirations.

“Equally important, however, are the roles and functions that political institutions like the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum play in our development,” she said.
