20 May 2024 – Discussions progressed in China last week for Samoa to establish a fishing port that will serve local and international fishing vessels and provide an on-site fish processing facility.

The proposed fishing port near the Faleolo International Airport would develop the economy of Samoa not only in the fishing industry but also by attracting other businesses to the area.

Discussions took place at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre between the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao and his delegation that included Samoa’s Ambassador to China, Luamanuvae Albert Mariner and the CEO of MAF, Seuseu Dr. Tauati and representatives from China.

The Minister visited the Shenzhen International Fisheries and Seafood Expo in China in 2024. The Expo gave the opportunity for dialogue between leaders from Shenzhen City, Guangdong Province, and representatives from Pacific Island countries.

Representatives from China included the General Director Bureau of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the General Director of Urban Planning, and Natural Resources Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, and the Deputy General Manager of China National Agriculture Development Group Co. Ltd.

The fishing industry in Samoa is constantly changing, and the opportunity to visit the exhibition was a good way to learn about the latest trends and identify opportunities to increase benefits for Samoa’s fisheries industry.
