Apia, Samoa – 24 September 2024– After a 30-year hiatus, Samoa is back as Hylani Pearl Kurrupu steps into the spotlight as Miss Universe Samoa.
Her crowning last week was celebrated with an outpouring of joy and pride from family, friends, and supporters, signalling a new chapter in the country’s beauty pageant history.
Speaking at Haylani’s crowning, the Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio said the journey is not just personal but it embodies the collective hopes and aspirations of Samoan women.
“Your journey is not just a personal experience but one that inspires hope and pride in every heart of Samoan women everywhere,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
As she prepares to compete at the 73rd Miss Universe Pageant in Mexico City on November 16, Haylani will enter with accomplishments such as Miss Melbourne Australia, First Runner-Up at the Miss Pacific Islands, and Vice Global at Miss Global 2023 and Miss Universe Samoa 2024.
As she prepares to take the next step on to Miss Universe, she is reminded of the Samoan proverb: “O le tele o sulu e maua ai figota – By many torches, the catch is assured.”
“This speaks to the power of collaboration and unity, and today, it symbolises how the achievements of multiple Samoan women on various platforms serve as many torches lighting the way for the progress and empowerment of our country,” she said.
“The beauty of pageantry is that it allows multiple women to shine, each with their own cause and story to tell. There’s enough room for every queen to thrive.
“We are not limited by our size, our resources, or our geography. We are warriors, nurturers, and leaders.”
Haylani’s primary sponsor, Manaia Events is excited that the Miss Universe platform will be an invaluable opportunity to further expose Samoa as a small island nation to a multi-million global audience and tourist market.
As she embarks on this journey representing the country, she proudly carries with her not just a crown but a legacy of strength that typifies the character of countless other Samoan women.
The heartfelt support from the Government and people of Samoa underscores Haylani’s representation as she prepares to make her mark in this prestigious international beauty pageant.
