Samoa FESA rescue 75 crew of distressed HMNZS Manawanui

Apia, Samoa – 06 October 2024 – The swift action by the Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) and police ensured the safe evacuation of all 75 crew of the HMNZS Manawanui, which caught fire after running aground off the coast of Siumu on Upolu Islands’ southern coast.

The Fire Rescue team responded to a distress call from the HMNZ Manawanui navy crew and worked through Saturday night until Sunday morning. Unfortunately, no one was seriously injuredand no lives were lost.

As flames engulfed parts of the ship, crew and passengers evacuated to life rafts and sea boats, prompting rapid response from local authorities and residents of Siumu village also assisted bringing the crew onshore.

FESA said “We’re proud to say, “We Saved Them”, and warned foreign vessels to be careful if they are unsure about Samoa’s maritime area.

New Zealand Defence Minister, Judith Collins expressed her gratitude on X, acknowledging the brave assistance from the Samoan people and assuring families that their loved ones were safe.

“My thoughts this morning are with the officers, crew, and passengers on the HMNZS Manawanui,” Collins stated.

“I certainly want to recognize the incredible efforts of those who helped coordinate and rescue our New Zealand crew.”

The HMNZS Manawanui is a specialist dive and hydrographic vessel tasked with various missions, including explosives disposal and underwater search and recovery. Recently, it had been conducting surveys in Samoa to update nautical charts, last done in 1987.

Initial information report the reef that the vessel hit is marked on the chart.

As the investigation into the incident unfolds, both New Zealand and Samoan authorities are expected to collaborate closely in ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
