Apia, Samoa – 22 October 20024 – Over 350 young leaders from 56 Commonwealth nations attending the Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) have made a powerful declaration aimed at positioning youth as key decision-makers in the pursuit of sustainable development.

The forum’s theme, “Navigating Our Course: Building Resilience for a Common Future, Matimatiga for a Stronger Future,” encapsulated the collective commitment to fostering youth-led initiatives that can address pressing global challenges.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, KC, praised the newly elected CYC executive, urging them to embrace their role as change-makers.

“You have the power to push boundaries, challenge norms, and lead in ways that previous generations could not,” she said.

The highlight of the forum was the installation of the new CYC Executive, which for the first time saw men outnumber women.

This shift signals ongoing efforts to narrow the gender gap in leadership roles.

Newly-elected Chairperson Joshua Opey expressed his eagerness to collaborate with all stakeholders, emphasizing the urgent need for meaningful youth engagement across all levels of governance.

Youth participation in global issues such as climate change, mental health, and the digital divide were major issues discussed.

These discussions resulted in the 13th CYF Declaration, formally presented to the Commonwealth Secretary-General. This document lays out actionable recommendations for enhancing youth involvement in governance through initiatives like the creation of digital democracy platforms and a Commonwealth Youth Climate Innovation Fund.

The Commonwealth Youth Forum has established a robust foundation for youth-led solutions and engagement, serving as a rallying call for 1.5 billion young people across the Commonwealth.

The forum closed with an electrifying performance by a 70-piece orchestra and heartfelt speeches from attendees, including government ministers and senior officials who actively encouraged the continuing exchange of ideas among youth representatives.

The forum also underscored several significant milestones, including over 50 years of the Commonwealth Youth Program (CYP) and the 10th anniversary of the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC).
