Apia, Samoa – 31 October 2024 – Public servants will be on a two days holiday and a long weekend in recognition of their work for to the success of last weeks’ Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. This was announced in a special Thanksgiving Service yesterday where the collaborative efforts of the country and so many others were acknowledged that contributed to the success and special moments the event created and captured.
Samoa’s hosting of GHOGM 2024 has already attracted high commendations and that the event transcended expectations and showcased the unity and spirit of the Samoan people.
The thanksgiving service, held at the Tuana’imato venue where the summit was opened by King Charles last Friday, was led by the Deputy Chair of the Congregational Christian Church in Samoa, Reverend Esera Auatama Esera.
Planned for over two years, Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa, along with members of her Cabinet, acknowledged the tireless contributions of the Samoan people and villages, highlighting the importance of collaboration in overcoming any challenges.
The event was particularly significant as it was the first time a small Pacific island nation hosted the prestigious gathering, with notable attendees including the King as Head of the Commonwealth and Queen of the United Kingdom.
Despite the myriad challenges faced throughout the week, including logistical hurdles and potential disruptions, the Samoan people emerged with high commendations for their hospitality and organizational prowess.
Reverend Esera reflected on the blessings bestowed upon Samoa, asserting that the success of the taligāmālō – hosting, was a testament to the collective efforts of all the citizens, elders, and government officials.
“The praise and gratitude must be directed to our Almighty God for the wonderful things He has done for us,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to thank the international partners for their unwavering support, which proved instrumental in the lead-up to the event.
“Today is not merely a day of thanks; it is a day to reaffirm our commitment to each other and to the people of Samoa,” she declared.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of unity within Samoa, emphasizing the shared responsibilities of leaders, public servants, and citizens alike.
“We must continue to foster our connections, strengthening the bonds that hold us together as a nation,” she stated.
She then announced that Friday (01 November) and the following Monday (04 November) would be designated as commission holidays to allow government workers to celebrate the momentous occasion.
