Nurses and Midwives Celebrate Achievements in Thanksgiving Service

Apia, Samoa – 18 November 2024 – The nurses and midwives in Samoa came together last Friday to celebrate the significant advancements in their profession.

A recent review by the Public Service Commission has culminated in a new structural framework and approved salary increments, marking a momentous occasion for the healthcare professionals.

The celebration took place at the Ministry of Health under the theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: The Economic Power of Care” and the attendees donned new and bright colorful uniforms introduced to enhance professionalism, with each color representing a different working day—except for Sundays.

The Minister of Health, Valasi Luapitofanua To’ogamaga Tafito Selesele delivered the keynote address, expressing deep gratitude for the unwavering commitment and service of the nurses and midwives.

He emphasized the importance of honesty and compassionate care in their duties, reflecting on the challenges that have defined their work during tumultuous times.

“This thanksgiving service is a day of victory, marking the achievement of something that has long been sought after,” Valasi proclaimed.

He acknowledged the tireless efforts of the Ministry of Health, its CEO, management, and, importantly, the nursing staff who navigated the complexities of crises such as the Measles outbreak, Covid-19 pandemic, and dengue fever, as well as the hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

He also extended thanks to the Public Service Commission for their role in facilitating the successful review that led to these advancements.

Special recognition was given to PSC Commissioner, Fonoti Perelini Perelini, who attended the event, highlighting the collaborative efforts that have ushered in this new era for healthcare professionals in Samoa.

The ceremony was blessed by Reverend Fa’amanatu Tavita of the Methodist Church at Nu’usuatia.

Speaking on behalf of the nurses and midwives, Chief Nursing Officer, Polataivao Semau Momoti Ulisese Tapuvae reflected on the milestones achieved within their professions, celebrating the accomplishments of those dedicated to the care of the Samoan people.

The thanksgiving service also reinforced the vital role that nurses and midwives play in building a healthier future for Samoa.
