U.S. Ambassador Tom Udall Concludes Tenure with Final Visit to Samoa

Apia, Samoa – 15 November 2024– U.S. Ambassador Tom Udall recently wrapped up his tenure in Samoa with a final official visit on October 29, marking a significant chapter in U.S.-Samoa relations.

Ambassador Udall’s time in office has been characterized by resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to enhancing bilateral ties, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reflecting on his experience, he stated, “It has been an honor to serve as Ambassador to Samoa during such a transformative time. While my tenure may have started under unusual circumstances, the relationships we forged and the initiatives we launched have been extraordinary.”

His collaborative efforts with local organizations and the Samoan government have contributed to Samoa’s sustainable development, reinforcing the enduring partnership between the two nations.

During his farewell visit, Ambassador Udall engaged with key Samoan leaders, including Head of State Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi II, Masiofo Faamausili Leinafo Tuimalealiifano, and Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa.

A highlight of the visit was the Ambassador’s engagement with the U.S. Army Reserve’s Brigadier General Katherine Trombley and the members of the 9th Mission Support Command, who participated in the Soifua Manuia Medical Mission.

Over two weeks, U.S. medical providers collaborated with their Samoan counterparts to deliver critical health services to over 650 community members.

The Ambassador witnessed the mission’s impact firsthand during visits to district hospitals in Upolu and Savaii.

Additionally, Ambassador Udall celebrated the personal connections facilitated by the Peace Corps Volunteers in Savaii, emphasizing the essential role of citizen diplomacy in fostering understanding between the United States and Samoa.

He also visited to two U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) projects: the Promoting Resilience through Essentials Pre-Positioned for Samoa (PREPS) project and the WE RISE initiative in partnership with Samoa Water Authority. These projects highlight ongoing efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and expand access to clean water in local communities.

The Ambassador’s visit concluded with a farewell reception, where Deputy Prime Minister Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio acknowledged Udall’s impactful legacy.

“Ambassador Udall, you set history with your virtual credentialing, a testament to your determination to build partnerships with Samoa. Your initiatives have brought significant assistance to Samoa and the Blue Pacific region,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

As he prepares for the next chapter of his career, Ambassador Udall leaves behind a legacy of goodwill, cooperation, and a hopeful future for U.S.- Samoa relations. His unwavering commitment to Samoa’s development will be remembered with deep appreciation by the communities he has served.
