Eti Lesoa scoops the 22nd International Siva Afi Competition

Apia Samoa, 26 November 2024– In a stunning showcase of skill, agility, coordination and tradition, Eti Lesoa from Siumu emerged victorious at the 22nd International Siva Afi Competition last Saturday evening.

Eti takes after his father Pati Lesoa who won the same competition more than ten years prior and made his name dazzling audiences with his fire dancing feats on the global market.

Organized by the Ailao Club, the annual event continues to draw competitors from around the globe, upholding its legacy of promoting the rich and cultural artform unique to Samoa.

This year’s competition featured five finalists out of 11 initial contenders, each demonstrating remarkable talent and technique as they performed with burning knives, captivating the audience with their fiery artistry.

The finalists included Jack Laban from Fogapoa, Kome Perese Feagaimaalii from Matautu and Australia, Pasitele Toomalatai from Puipaa, and Walter Leota from Tufuiopa.

Judging this year’s competition were esteemed figures in the Siva Afi artform including Galumalemana Patrick Rasmussen, David Galea’i, and Matagofie Kome Feagaimaalii, all of whom bring extensive experience from both local and international stages.

Acting Prime Minister Faualo Harry Jeffrey Schuster commended the efforts of Siva Afi owners Leota Lene and Clare for bolstering Samoa’s tourism economy through initiatives like the Siva Afi Competition.

“This competition has not only made Samoa a prime tourism destination, but it has also attracted over 200 guests each night to your shows, affirming its significance to our economy,” said Faualo.

First runner up, Kome Feagaimaalii with a prize of $5,000 and Jack Laban followed closely in third place and $3,000 prize.

Leota Lene reflected on the event’s history since its inception in 2002, highlighting its humble beginnings with young street vendors known as “ula boys.” His initiative to train these youths in the art of Siva Afi has led many young men achieve success on both local and international stages.

Despite fierce competition, 19-year-old Eti Lesoa claimed the top prize of $10,000, having honed his craft since he was five years old.

He expressed his excitement about representing Samoa at the World International Siva Afi competitions in Hawaii, stating, “This opportunity allows me to showcase my talents and skills on a broader platform.”

The Ailao paddle dance was part of the nights entertainment.

Kome Feagaimaalii came in second with a prize of $5,000, while Jack Laban followed closely in third place and winning $3,000.

The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of various local and international businesses, including Fiji Airways, Return to Paradise Resort, Vailima Breweries, Coca Cola, the Samoa Tourism Authority, among others.

As the International Siva Afi Competition continues to flourish, it not only celebrates the captivating performing art of fire knife dancing but also solidifies Samoa’s cultural legacy on the world stage.
