Whooping Cough Outbreak Hits Samoa

Apia, Samoa – 29 November 2024 – The Ministry of Health has declared the outbreak of whooping cough in Samoa.

In a press release, the Ministry confirmed 6 cases and the number continues to increase.

“A total of 6 confirmed cases have been reported to MOH including the one confirmed case that was publicized in our press release issued last Friday,” said the release.

The confirmed cases are within the age group ranging from 3 weeks to 40 years with the majority being less than 1 year.

The Ministry is also awaiting the results of further suspected cases being tested overseas.

The Ministry said Whooping cough is a transmissible and contagious respiratory illness caused by the bacterium Bordetello Pertussis and it spreads easily from person to person especially in overcrowded places.

The public is advised to look out for symptoms of high pitch sound when coughing, vomiting after coughing, fatigue and difficulty in breathing.

Once these signs show, the public is advised to seek medical attention quickly.
