Chinese national in custody for shooting at a police officer

Apia, Samoa – 25 January 2025 – A police officer is recovering at the Motootua Hospital after undergoing surgery to remove a bullet from a gunshot wound to his neck. He was allegedly shot at by a Chinese national during a standoff with police at Siusega yesterday afternoon.

The injured officer was part of a team that attended a call on a domestic violence matter where the suspect barricaded himself and his former wife inside his shop at Siusega.

There was heavy police presence and the main road to the store was blocked to the public as police used a translator to negotiate with the suspect who later gave himself up at around 7.30pm.

The suspect is now in police custody for questioning.

Samoa Police and Prison Correction Services has acknowledged the support of the community for taking heed of the police directions around Siusega while they were dealing with the matter.

The injured officer had to undergo surgery to remove the bullet and is in stable condition.
