Schools Close as Bad Weather Continue

Apia, Samoa – 20 February 2025 – All schools were closed today as hurried notices sent on social media early in the morning asked parents to keep their children at due to heavy rains, flooding and gusty winds.
The bad weather conditions over the last two days continue and the weather forecast indicate that Samoa will continue to experience bad weather throughout the week.
The updated report states that an active convergence zone still lies within the vicinity of Samoa with associated strong northwesterly winds, rains and thunderstorms affecting the group.
Heavy rain and flood warnings are enforced for all areas of the country and also coastal flood advisory remains enforced for Samoa.

Impact of strong winds
Strong winds could endanger lives from flying debris, travel routes and travel services, disruption of power and mobile communication.
The Land & Transport Authority (LTA) have also issued public warnings to avoid certain areas heavily affected by flooding and landslides due to the weather conditions.
Such areas include the Tropicana crossing at Fugalei, the Fagalii Ford and the East Coast Road and the Lemafa crossing towards Lotofaga in Upolu.
Other areas include Salailua, Taga and Sasina Fords in Savaii.
LTA continues to monitor the situation and will inform the public while the MET office monitors the convergence situation in-case there’s a storm brewing within the Samoan zone.
