Apia, Samoa – 15 May 2025 – The Samoa Deaf Association has rebranded itself and launched its new identity through the inspiring platform of the National Men’s Deaf Rugby 7s Team preparations.

Formerly the Deaf Association of Samoa (DAS) founded in 2017, the rebranding introduces a new name – The Samoa Deaf Association and logo for the organisation. The Association (SDA) however remains the same legal entity, with the same board, members, and goals.

“The name and logo have been updated to better reflect our growth, improve visibility, and strengthen alignment with national and international advocacy for Deaf and hearing-impaired persons in Samoa,” says a SDA’s statement.

According to SDA President Eli Sio, “It’s been a challenging past couple of years, but we are glad that through this 7s campaign, we are finally able to progress some of the changes we’ve long envisioned.

“Sport has brought us together, not just as a team but as a community. This rebranding reflects the same unity and energy we see in our players.

“Using the unifying power of sport especially through rugby 7s, the association has strengthened ties across its members, stakeholders, and the wider community. The team’s preparations have served as the perfect platform to mark this new chapter, bringing visibility to Deaf athletes and highlighting the potential of sport to drive social connection and awareness,” said the statement.

The new Samoa Deaf Association logo carries deep meaning:
* The map of Samoa and the Southern Cross, adorned with Samoan cultural motifs, represent identity and pride.
* Hand gestures forming the initials ‘SDA’ and an ear-shaped symbol highlight the association’s focus on Deaf culture and communication.
* The colours red and blue reflect the national colours of Samoa-bold, proud, and deeply rooted.

The Association has been overwhelmed with the support and response from church groups, communities, businesses, and individuals who have stepped in to support not just our 7s campaign, but our association as a whole.

The rugby 7s preparations, in partnership with Marist St Joseph’s Sports Club and Marist Brothers Primary School, have played a vital role in this rebranding journey.

“Rugby 7s has helped bring the Deaf community together and given athletes a chance to grow,” said Head Coach Tausa Fa’amaoni Lalomilo. “For many, this is their first time playing rugby, but after three weeks of training, their attitude has been really positive. They’re learning teamwork, confidence, and life skills they can use in other parts of their lives. We’ve also involved them in planning and decision-making, so they can learn how to lead and support each other.”

The rebrand is now live across digital platforms, with updates to the association’s social media page, email contact, and official stationery. With a fresh look but the same passionate team, the Samoa Deaf Association continues to champion empowerment, opportunity, and unity for the Deaf community in Samoa.

Founded in 2017, the Deaf Association of Samoa (DAS)—now Samoa Deaf Association (SDA)—is the recognized national advocacy organisation for persons who are Deaf and hearing impaired in Samoa. SDA continues to work closely with government ministries, civil society organisations, and community stakeholders to help achieve a more inclusive, equitable, and accessible Samoa.
