Head of State to dissolve Parliament

Apia, Samoa – 28 May 2025 – The Head of State has accepted the Prime Ministers advice to dissolve parliament so the country can proceed to the general elections.

This follows the rejection by parliament of the 2025/2026 Budget yesterday morning.

The Head of State also announced that the Cabinet will continue as the Executive Government of Samoa.

An announcement from the Head of State, said “The Prime Minister met with me to advise that the Appropriations Bill for the Government budget for 2025/2026 could not proceed to the first reading in Parliament this morning. As such, the Prime Minister has advised me that it is necessary to dissolve Parliament so the country can proceed to the General Elections. I have accepted the Prime Minister’s advice.

“Accordingly, a formal Notice will be duly gazetted to confirm the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly. Pursuant to Articles 32(1) and 33(1) of the Constitution, Cabinet continues to have the general direction and control of the executive government of Samoa, until the first session of the Legislative Assembly following dissolution.”
