Parliament to Dissolve 3 June – New Elections in 3 months

The parliament session on Tuesday 27 May where the budget was defeated on the first reading.

Apia, Samoa – 29 May 2025 – Samoa is expected to go to the polls to elect a new government in three months when the Head of State dissolves Parliament next Tuesday, 3 June.

In a public notice, announcing the dissolution of Parliament last night, the Head of State, Tuimalealiifano Vaaletoa Sualauvi 11 said he acted on the Prime Ministers request and advice on 27 May to dissolve parliament after Cabinet failed to pass the Appropriation Bill 2025/2026 at the Legislative Assembly. The vote on the budget was determined by the Prime Minister as a question of confidence in her Cabinet.

At the dissolution of Parliament, the Head of State has also determined for the Prime Minister and Cabinet to continue as the care taker government “to have the general direction and control of the executive government of Samoa in a caretaker capacity, until the first session of the Legislative Assembly following the dissolution.”

Parliament rejected the Budget on Tuesday by 14-34 against before the budget was even read out by the Minister of Finance.

The Human Rights Protection Party as the Opposition and the breakaway 20 MPs of the FAST Party have been calling the minority government led by Fiame Naomi Mataafa illegal and the need to go back to the voters in an early election to see who has the people’s confidence to lead the country.
