Well-known author Sia Figiel found dead in prison cell

Apia, SAMOA – 26 January 2026: The dead body of well-known Samoan writer Papali’i Sia Figel now lies at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole hospital morgue to await whether she will undergo a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death.

Acting Police Commissioner Afamasaga Samuelu Leiataua confirmed with the media the dead body was found in her prison cell at the Tanumalala Prison at about 6.15 this morning.

She  has been in police custody since May 2024, accused of the death of Professor Sinavaiana Caroline Gabbard at Papali’i’s home at Vaivase.

She faced 5 charges including murder, manslaughter, armed with a dangerous weapon and grievous body harm.

She was scheduled to be sentenced on 20 February 2026.
