Apia, SAMOA – 5 February 2026 – The Samoa Umbrella for Non-Governmental Organisations (SUNGO) has appointed Afioga Lavea Peseta Lua Nafo’i as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Lavea comes to the position with a distinguished career in civil society and community development and nonprofit leadership and a wealth of experience and a strong vision for advancing SUNGO’s mission of strengthening civil society and empowering communities across Samoa.

“We are delighted to welcome Lavea as our new CEO,” said Amituana’i Dr. Cecilia Alailima, Acting President of SUNGO’s Executive Council.

“His proven leadership, commitment to collaboration, and passion for sustainable development will be invaluable as SUNGO continues to support NGOs and community-based organizations throughout Samoa.”

As CEO, Lavea will oversee SUNGO’s strategic direction, partnerships, and programs, ensuring that the organization remains a trusted voice for civil society and a catalyst for positive change.

Lavea said he is honoured to join SUNGO at such a pivotal time. “Together with our dedicated team and partners, I look forward to building on SUNGO’s legacy and driving initiatives that uplift communities and strengthen the role of NGOs in Samoa’s development.”

SUNGO has long served as the umbrella body for non-governmental organizations in Samoa, providing advocacy, capacity-building, and coordination to ensure that the voices of communities are heard in national and regional decision-making.

The appointment marks an exciting new chapter in the organization’s journey. He takes over from Fuimaono Ofoia who has been appointed CEO of the Ministry of Revenue.
